How to Remove Car Air Conditioning Smells
Reading Time: 2 minutes
We all know just how helpful an air conditioning system in a car is. On a summer’s day, putting your windows down and opening the sunroof can only provide so much climate control, which is why those dials on your dashboard come in so handy all the time. However, one side effect that can hinder some systems is that the air conditioning can emit unpleasant smells from time to time. This is a guide that will help you to remove car air conditioning smells and enjoy a perfect climate in your vehicle.
1. Dry Out the Car AC
It is common to arrive at your destination and just turn off your vehicle and get out. However, this means that your air conditioning system has not had as much time to dry out before being turned off. On each journey, try and remember to turn off the air conditioning at least two minutes before turning your engine off, but remember to leave the fan on. This allows your AC to dry out and reduce the risk of fungi growing.
2. Antiseptic Spray
Antiseptic spray is a trusty assistant. Firstly, turn on your air conditioning to the highest level, ensuring that it is not set to ‘recirculate’. Then, roll down your windows, and spray disinfectant spray into your exterior air vents – these are located between the top of your bonnet and your windscreen. Spray in 20-30 second bursts, repeating for 10 minutes. Leave the AC to run for another 10 minutes with the windows down before turning it off.
3. Component Replacement
The worst case scenario is that you may have to have some components replaced. If you have tried the above steps and have seen no results, then take your car to a professional mechanic to see what they think. They may have to replace some parts, but the above practices often take care of the problem, so only use a garage as a last resort.
Be sure to take care of your car air conditioning as you would the system in your building, and you should be able to enjoy an odour-free temperature control system.
